The Nile: Up Close and Personal

Written by:

I went white water rafting at the source of the Nile in Jinja, Uganda. I thought I was going to die. Have I mentioned my unnatural fear of water before? More to come when I find a keyboard with letters printed on the keys. Off to Tanzania on the bus tomorrow. ?

Oooo, I feel for you. My ultimate fear is being trapped underwater without being able to breath. I went rafting once in the wilds of West Virginia– I don’t think it’s something I’d like to repeat. I let go of my paddle during the first rapid and konked my Uncle in the head right after he told us to never let go of the end of the paddle.

Did they tell you what class the rapids were??

Didn’t know that rafting down the nile was scarry! They made you wear helmets? Oh never mind, I just looked at the rafting website you posted and it does look like “holy shit, im going to pee my pants” type of scarry!
PS—I guess after those pict’s, I would vote on your poll “insanity”..but don’t get me wrong, I would still want the adventure and go on that thrill ride!
    Pura Vida!!!!

Stacy, then don’t go rafting because that’s exactly what it was like. They were class 3-5 rapids… I think maybe 3-4 class 5. We had to walk around a 6 and then the 5 was just at the bottom of the last 6, where we put in and went to the bad place.

Lucas, Lucas. Yes, most people thought it was awesome once they could breathe again.

    Claudia,
There’s a lot of different parts of the nile. I mean, up in Egypt it’s just flat. There’s a lot of rocks in the rapids and some people cut their legs so the helmets are neccesary!

I have photos of the boats going out the day after (when they tell me Ewan McGreggar went—I was asleep when they were in camp) but obviously couldn’t bring my camera on the trip. I did chip in with a girl to buy the official photos, so when she gets them in England and if she sends them to me they will be up here.
